Year End Inventory Donation: Why December Is the Deadline That Matters

A charitable deduction counts in the year the donation is completed. For inventory, that means the goods have to be delivered to the nonprofit by December 31, not just promised. Here is how to make the date.

Why November matters

Matching a recipient takes days, scheduling a carrier takes more, and nonprofits are busiest in December. Requests that come in by mid November are comfortably delivered before year end. Late December requests are a gamble.

What counts as completed

Delivery to the nonprofit. Keep the bill of lading and the dated acknowledgment. We collect both for you.

Inventory that is easiest to move fast

  • Shelf stable food and beverages
  • Hygiene and cleaning products
  • New apparel, especially winter items
  • Toys and kids products for holiday drives
  • Office furniture and supplies

Inventory that needs more lead time

  • Full truckloads that need to be split across recipients
  • Hazmat items such as sanitizer or aerosols
  • Electronics that need data wiping first

Get in before the rush

Send the list now, and we schedule the pickup to land before December 31. Get a donation quote.
